My mother told me that my grandfather knew someone who had died in the Titanic disaster. (I never learned who it was.) Even though my grandfather died in 1957, which one might think meant he avoided the current sensationalism of media-driven disaster capitalism, he was really upset by the rash of Titanic souvenirs and tchotchkes that became popular in the wake of the disaster.
