My hunch is that like most movements no one person or incident created it. Crazy for God is an excellent book, but FS does make it sound like he & dad were singlehandedly responsible for the Christian right. There are mini worlds w/in evangelicalism and they don’t always interact. The Schaeffers were in the Calvinist Reformed Presbyterian mold—the thinkers. I used to buy into all that but no more thank goddess! The intellectual “frozen chosen” tend to look down on big churches, ego-driven pastors, love of money, etc. —not your “typical” evangelicals. Their thing is about being theologically correct and it can get very dry. Not to mention all the obvious problems of patriarchy and homophobia and more lately right wing politics. My pastors avoided politics to the point that you got the impression they thought it didn’t matter. So glad to be out of that
