It took 80 years of work by suffragists for women to obtain the vote in the US, and even then only 3/4 of state legislatures ratified the 19th Amendment. Now, no one dares question this right, least of all in public. The #MeToo movement is not going away any time soon. There is a lot of fear among men about the current atmosphere, as I’ve seen even in some of the men (all politically progressive) I’m interviewing for my blog. I believe that some of those fears are justified, and we need to listen to men’s fears. As one of my interviewees said, “We need to have hard conversations.”
Radically changing the culture is going to take time. A long time. For one thing, the new “rules” about social/sexual behavior aren’t spelled out. Convincing men that #MeToo actually benefits them, which I believe it does, means we have to go beyond accusations to solutions. For me, now, it means engaging in those hard conversations. #MeToo. In spades.
