I wonder Jon if you’ve done any research on Francis Schaeffer. His son Frank has written some terrific books on having been, along with his dad, an architect of the Religious Right. The elder Schaeffer was supposed to be the embodiment of a thoughtful arts-supporting evangelical who welcomed counter cultural types at L’Abri, the community he founded w wife Edith, which is still around today. Christianity Today reports that Timothy Leary “visited L’Abri twice.” Along with the moody b&w photos on the current L’Abri website, I guess that’s supposed to add to the Schaeffer mythos as a father of “cool” evangelicalism. Frank Schaeffer Jr wrote a terrific book on his parents, Crazy for God, in which he himself takes responsibility for being instrumental in helping found the Religious Right with his father. He regrets that now.
