Fascinating and scary!! Not because I’m scared of “people” who look human but aren’t. I’m scared of what humans will do—and have done—to people they deem to be less than human. The justification of the North American slave trade comes to mind, as does the Holocaust and many other examples. Who is capable of making that call? If anyone thinks they are, I would warn all and sundry to flee, fast. Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein may not have had a “soul” but he had a keenly developed and tragic sense of morality, aware that the wrongness he represented was not of his own doing. Similarly, the cloned young people in Kazuo Ishiguro’s masterful novel Never Let Me Go cast a poignant and incredibly tender light on what humanity truly is. Utopian spirituality can be very dangerous.
